Severe Flood Events: Whitesburg, KY

A hydroclimatological analysis comparing the July 2022 eastern-Kentucky flood to historical patterns, examining atmospheric conditions and hydroclimatological mechanisms that made this the only major Whitesburg flood to occur during tropical storm season.

Challenge

Comparing the July 2022 flood event against decades of historical flood records while accounting for differences in instrumentation and reporting methods.

Approach

Analyzed synoptic-scale atmospheric conditions, precipitation totals, and stream-gauge records to contextualize the 2022 event within the region's flood climatology.

Outcome

Demonstrated that the July 2022 event was unique in Whitesburg's record as the only major flood during tropical storm season, contributing to regional hazard-assessment literature.
